INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Amit Shah hails from a Gujarati Hindu business-class family, where his formative years were marked by both challenges and early political engagement. Growing up in Mansa, he faced bullying in primary school, often having his lunch stolen and his black slate broken by classmates. Despite these adversities, Amit’s mischievous spirit shone through, often landing him in trouble and prompting his parents to visit the principal’s office. His family’s eventual move to Ahmedabad marked a pivotal transition in his life, setting the stage for his burgeoning interest in politics. At just 13, he began working on his first political campaign, assisting Maniben Patel, the daughter of the legendary Vallabhbhai Patel, during the 1977 Lok Sabha elections. This early involvement laid the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to public service and political activism.
Upon completing his education, Shah initially worked alongside his father in a PVC manufacturing factory, later trying his hand at stockbroking in Ahmedabad. However, it was his growing association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) that profoundly shaped his future. Joining as a pracharak in 1980, Amit became closely acquainted with Narendra Modi, who would later emerge as a significant influence in his life. Quickly showcasing his leadership capabilities, Shah was appointed head of the committee that organized youth activities within the RSS. By the age of 20, he had solidified his connection to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), joining the party a year before Modi. Under Modi’s guidance, Amit took an active role in the Akhil Bharatiya Vishwa Parishad (ABVP), eventually rising to the position of joint secretary.
Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Amit Shah’s political acumen continued to flourish. As the secretary of the BJP in Ahmedabad by 1989, he organized significant campaigns, including the Ekta Yatra aimed at unifying Hindus around the Ram Mandir issue in Ayodhya. His efforts proved fruitful, with Shah successfully enrolling thousands of influential members into the party. By 1999, he became the president of the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank, marking his influence in Gujarat’s cooperative sector. Here, he reversed a substantial financial loss, leading the bank back to profitability and solidifying his reputation as an effective organizer and leader. His close alliance with Modi only deepened during this period, as Shah navigated the political landscape of Gujarat, often acting as Modi’s trusted confidant during challenging times.
The early 2000s saw Shah’s political stature rise alongside Modi’s ascent as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. After winning multiple elections as an MLA from Sarkhej, he was entrusted with several major portfolios, including Home and Law. His tenure as Home Minister was marked by significant reforms in police modernization and public safety. However, his career faced turbulence when he was embroiled in a controversial case concerning the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter. Despite this setback that led to his temporary sidelining in the party, Shah’s political resilience remained evident. He re-emerged as a pivotal figure within the BJP, eventually becoming the party’s National President in 2014. Under his leadership, the BJP experienced unprecedented growth, with millions enrolling in the party, establishing Shah as one of the most influential political figures in contemporary Indian politics.
