INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Washington Sundar’s journey into the world of cricket began in a household deeply passionate about the sport. Born into a cricket-loving family, his father, M Sundar, played domestic cricket, instilling in young Washington a love for the game from an early age. Their home in Triplicane was not only a nurturing environment but also a crucial junction in Washington’s formative years, where an ex-army man named P.D. Washington lived nearby. This kind-hearted neighbor took a keen interest in M Sundar’s aspirations for his son, generously supporting Washington’s early cricketing endeavors by covering school fees, purchasing books, and providing essential cricket equipment. Tragically, Washington was born just a few months after P.D. Washington’s passing in 1999, a challenging delivery that he miraculously survived. In homage to the man who aided his father’s dreams, M Sundar decided to name his son Washington, a name that would carry significant meaning throughout his life.
From the very beginning, Washington’s father envisioned a bright cricketing future for him, nurturing his talent alongside his elder sister, Shailaja. They trained together, honing their skills under the watchful eye of their father, who aspired for Washington to excel as a batsman. However, Washington’s resilience was first put to the test at just nine years old during an Under-14 school match when he suffered a severe injury, taking a ball to the temple that required five stitches. Undeterred, Washington returned to the field the very next day, demonstrating remarkable grit by scoring an unbeaten 39 runs and leading his team to victory. This early display of determination paved the way for his future success, culminating in his recognition as the leading run-scorer for Tamil Nadu in the Under-16 tournaments in 2013. This achievement earned him a spot in the prestigious 40-day training camp at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, further forging his path to professional cricket.
Washington’s ascent continued as he represented India in the Under-19 World Cup, showcasing his potential on a global stage. His breakthrough in the Indian Premier League (IPL) came in 2017 when he was selected by the Rising Pune Supergiant as a replacement for the seasoned Ravichandran Ashwin. This marked the beginning of a promising IPL career, which saw him being acquired by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 3.2 crores during the 2018 auction, significantly surpassing his base price. His talent shone through in international cricket as well, with a memorable debut Test innings against Australia, where he scored 62 runs, famously hitting a ‘no look’ six off Nathan Lyon. Notably, he began that match without pads due to a COVID-19 situation, showcasing his adaptability and focus under pressure.
As Washington’s career progressed, he faced various challenges, including testing positive for COVID-19 in January 2022, which resulted in Jayant Yadav stepping in as his replacement for a series against South Africa. Still, Washington’s determination never wavered. In the 2022 IPL auction, he was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for an impressive Rs 8.75 crores, demonstrating his growing significance in the sport. His journey further evolved as he faced an unusual incident during a Test match against New Zealand in November 2024, when he had to wear the jerseys of teammates Dhruv Jurel and Axar Patel due to excessive heat. In the 2025 IPL auction, he was picked up by the Gujarat Titans for Rs 3.2 crores, showcasing his continued demand in the league. On April 6, 2025, while playing against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Washington faced a controversial dismissal at 49 runs that sparked debate over the umpiring decisions, a testament to the intense scrutiny professional athletes endure. Off the field, Washington reveals a lighter side; he has expressed a desire for the superpower of teleportation and would trade places with F1 racer Lewis Hamilton for a day. An animal lover at heart, he treasures the moments spent with his pet dog, reminding us that behind the athlete lies a young man with diverse interests and a deep appreciation for life.
