To sustain himself in the bustling city, he took on tutoring jobs, balancing his aspirations with the realities of daily life. His hard work paid off when he successfully cleared the UPSC examination in 1988, earning a coveted position in the Indian Revenue Service.

Udit Raj’s career in the IRS began earnestly as he took on the role of Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in Ghaziabad in 1990. His subsequent transfers to Delhi saw him rise through the ranks, serving as Deputy Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, and eventually Additional Commissioner of Income Tax until 2003. During this time, he garnered respect and recognition, particularly within the Dalit community, and caught the attention of national leaders such as V. P. Singh and Harkishan Singh Surjit, who foresaw a bright political future for him.
