INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Shriya Saran was born into a North Indian family that nurtured her artistic inclinations from a young age. Growing up, she completed her education in both Uttarakhand and New Delhi, where she immersed herself in the rich cultural environment that would shape her future pursuits. Her early interest in dance was cultivated under the guidance of her mother, who introduced her to Kathak and Rajasthani folk dance forms. This foundational training would eventually lead her to join an open-air theatre group called ‘Jhankaar’ at BHEL in New Delhi, where she honed her performance skills and embraced the vibrancy of live theater.
At the age of 14, Shriya embarked on her professional training in Kathak under the esteemed Shovana Narayan. Her dedication to the art form soon paid off, as she became a prominent performer in Shovana’s dance troupe, traveling across India to showcase her talent. It was during this pivotal time that Shovana encouraged her to audition for a music video titled “Thirakti Kyun Hawa.” Captivating audiences with her performance, Shriya caught the attention of filmmakers from Ramoji Films, who offered her a role in the Telugu film “Ishtam” in 2001. This marked the beginning of her illustrious career in cinema.
Shriya’s first major breakthrough came with the success of “Santosham” in 2002, where she starred alongside renowned actors Nagarjuna and Prabhu Deva. This success opened the floodgates to a diverse range of film opportunities, allowing her to act in various languages including Hindi, Tamil, English, Kannada, and Malayalam. Her versatility as an actress was evident as she starred in notable Telugu films like “Chennakesava Reddy,” “Nenunnanu,” and “Chhatrapati,” while also making her mark in Bollywood with hits such as “Awarapan” and “Drishyam.” Among her many achievements, the blockbuster “Sivaji: The Boss” (2007), featuring the legendary Rajinikanth, further solidified her status in the film industry.
Beyond acting, Shriya has made significant contributions to social causes, showcasing her commitment to philanthropy. She performed in the stage show “Netru, Indru, Naalai,” directed by Mani Ratnam, to raise funds for “The Banyan,” an organization dedicated to rehabilitating homeless women with mental illness. Her involvement with various NGOs, such as the Blue Cross of India and the Naandi Foundation, reflects her dedication to social causes. Additionally, in 2010, she established a spa aimed at providing employment opportunities for visually impaired individuals, demonstrating her belief in empowering others. Shriya’s multifaceted career also includes appearances in popular television shows and commercials, as well as a successful modeling career, further showcasing her versatility and passion for the arts. Her love for adventure is evident in her passion for scuba diving, while her personal life is enriched by moments spent with her pet dog and close friendship with actor Nagarjuna.
