INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Shraddha Joshi Sharma, a dedicated officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) from the illustrious 2007 batch, has carved a remarkable path in her professional journey. Married to IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, her life experienced a new spotlight in October 2023 when the film “12th Fail,” inspired by Manoj’s struggles on the road to becoming an IPS officer, was released. This cinematic portrayal sheds light on not only Manoj’s resilience but also the support and companionship that Shraddha provided throughout his challenging journey.
Born to two educators, Shraddha’s upbringing was steeped in discipline, shaped significantly by her parents’ strict approach to education. Her early academic prowess was evident as she completed her primary education under the Uttar Pradesh board, achieving an impressive 13th rank in the state for her 12th-grade examinations. After completing her formal education, she served as a physician in a Uttarakhand hospital, where a transformative experience motivated her to pursue civil service. Witnessing the tragic plight of a woman who succumbed to domestic abuse ignited a passion within Shraddha to advocate for change, prompting her, alongside her roommate Sanjay, to embark on a path toward becoming civil servants.
Determined to overcome the challenges she faced in Almora, Shraddha relocated to New Delhi to enroll at Drishti IAS, where her academic journey continued. Her dedication bore fruit when she successfully passed the PCS exams in 2005, leading to her appointment as a deputy collector in Nainital. Throughout this period, her relationship with Manoj flourished. He would often reach out during his police training at SVPNPA, checking in on her UPSC preparations. In their candid conversations, he provided not only encouragement but also practical advice, which Shraddha later acknowledged as pivotal to her motivation.
It was during her training at the institute that Shraddha first encountered Manoj, a moment she recalls fondly as love at first sight. Their connection blossomed, further strengthened by mutual support in their respective civil service pursuits. Shraddha’s disciplined nature and commitment were evident as she prepared for the UPSC examinations, where she secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 121, ultimately joining the IRS. Following her training at the National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur, she contributed to the Ministry of Tourism for the Government of Maharashtra, where she played a vital role in gender-inclusive policy development and fostering partnerships, such as the Memorandum of Understanding aimed at enhancing tourism ties between Maharashtra and Japan.
Despite the challenges posed by traditional familial expectations, Shraddha and Manoj’s love prevailed, although her parents initially hesitated due to his assignment in Maharashtra. Manoj’s clever reassurances about a potential cadre transfer ultimately won them over. Additionally, Shraddha, who enjoys the song “Senorita” from the film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” is proficient in weapon handling, a skill honed during her training. She humorously clarifies her struggles with swimming, noting that while swimming tests are mandatory for IPS officers, IRS training does not require the same. Beyond her commendable career achievements, Shraddha has also served as secretary at the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR), reinforcing her multifaceted commitment to public service. Today, as the film “12th Fail” resonates with audiences, it not only highlights Manoj’s perseverance but also reflects the indomitable spirit and support of Shraddha, a remarkable woman in her own right.
