INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Sanju Samson’s journey into the world of cricket began in a police residential colony in Delhi, where his formative years were shaped by an environment rich in sports and discipline. His passion for cricket was evident from an early age. By 2007, he had already made a name for himself as he captained the Kerala U-13 team in the KSCA Inter-State Under-13 tournament. In a remarkable display of talent, Sanju scored four centuries in five matches, amassing an astounding 973 runs at an average of 108.11, which earned him the coveted Player of the Tournament award. This early success was a testament to not only his skills but also his leadership qualities, traits that would serve him well throughout his career.
Sanju’s dedication to the sport stemmed from his family background; his father had a history of sportsmanship, playing as a center forward for the Delhi Police’s football team. This sporting lineage undoubtedly influenced Sanju’s aspirations, as he dreamt not only of cricketing glory but also entertained the thought of becoming an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. His cricketing journey progressed rapidly, with notable milestones including his T20 debut on October 16, 2011, against Hyderabad during the 2011-12 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and his first-class debut for Kerala against Vidarbha a few weeks later, on November 3, 2011.
At just 14, Sanju caught the attention of selectors for the Kerala cricket team, making waves in the Ranji Trophy. His potential was further recognized when he was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2012 Indian Premier League; however, he did not get the opportunity to play that season, leading to his release in 2013. Undeterred, Sanju continued to refine his skills, and after impressive performances in the 2010-11 Cooch Behar Trophy, he was chosen for the India U19 squad for the 2012 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup. His List-A debut came shortly after, on February 23, 2012, against Andhra Pradesh during the 2011-12 Vijay Hazare Trophy, showcasing his rapid ascent through the ranks of Indian cricket.
Sanju’s leadership capabilities flourished as he served as captain for both the Kerala U16 and U19 teams. By June 2013, he was appointed vice-captain of the India U-19 team for the Top End U-19 series in Australia. Shortly thereafter, at just 19 years old, he made a significant impact in the IPL, joining the Rajasthan Royals for 10 lakhs INR, only to be retained for 4 crores INR following impressive performances. He achieved his maiden first-class century during the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy against Himachal Pradesh and starred in the 2013-14 Under-19 Asia Cup final, scoring a century against Pakistan to clinch the trophy for India. Throughout this time, he was balancing his burgeoning cricket career with a personal life, having begun a romantic relationship with Charulatha during college, which culminated in their marriage in 2018 after five years of courtship.
As his cricketing prowess matured, Sanju established himself as a key player for Kerala, topping the team’s scoring charts in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy. His leadership was further solidified when, at the age of 20, he was named the captain of the Kerala cricket team for the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy season. Beyond the field, Sanju sought to give back to the community by founding the Six Guns Sports Academy in Thiruvananthapuram in 2018, aimed at nurturing young talent. His influence extended into social spheres as well, being appointed as the election icon ahead of the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections. In June 2022, Sanju made headlines with his maiden T20 international half-century against Ireland, scoring 77 runs off 42 balls, including a record partnership of 176 runs with Deepak Hooda.
The pinnacle of Sanju’s career came in 2024, when he was part of the Indian cricket team that triumphed in the ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies. This accomplishment not only solidified his status in the sport but also led to a memorable meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi following their victory. In February 2023, he was named the brand ambassador for the Indian Super League club Kerala Blasters FC, showcasing his versatility and popularity beyond cricket. Sanju Samson’s journey is a remarkable tapestry of talent, ambition, and commitment, marking him as a prominent figure in Indian cricket.
