INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Born into a Hyderabadi Muslim family in Bombay, now known as Mumbai, Sania Mirza’s early life was marked by a blend of cultural richness and sporting inclinations. Her family, which migrated to the United States in 1990 before returning to India within two years, was primarily cricket-centric, as revealed by her father, Imran Mirza. Although Imran had played tennis during his college years, it was his passion for cricket that defined the household atmosphere. Imran, a sports journalist who later ran a magazine called “Sports Call” in Hyderabad, eventually transitioned into the printing press business and later became a builder. This diverse background laid the foundation for Sania’s journey in sports.
Sania’s athletic pursuit began at the tender age of six when her father introduced her to lawn tennis at the Nizam Club in Hyderabad. Under the guidance of CK Bhupathi, the father of renowned tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi, she began her training, quickly demonstrating her talent. When the costs of her training became a challenge, Imran sought sponsorship from local businesses, leading to support from GVK Industries and Adidas by the time Sania was just 12 years old. Her father’s hands-on coaching and commitment to her development were pivotal as she transitioned from local courts to professional arenas. After honing her skills at the Sinnet Tennis Academy in Secunderabad, she took her training to the Ace Tennis Academy in the United States, emerging as a formidable junior player.
Sania Mirza’s ascent in tennis was marked by numerous triumphs. As a junior player, she clinched ten singles and 13 doubles titles, notably winning the Girls’ Doubles title at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships with partner Alisa Kleybanova. Her early successes included reaching the semifinals at the US Open Girls’ Doubles and securing significant victories on the senior circuit, particularly in Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, and Manila. Although her debut at the WTA tournament, the AP Tourism Hyderabad Open, ended in a loss, her first international accolade came when she teamed with Leander Paes to win a bronze medal in mixed doubles at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan. This was followed by a remarkable performance at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, where she garnered four gold medals, solidifying her reputation as a rising star in Indian tennis.
By 2005, Sania’s career flourished as she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA title, achieving this historic feat at the AP Tourism Hyderabad Open. Her momentum continued as she reached the fourth round of the US Open, a groundbreaking achievement for an Indian female player. Recognized for her extraordinary talent, she was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year that same year. As she continued to break barriers — becoming the first Indian woman seeded at a Grand Slam in 2006 — her success only grew. Sania’s accolades included multiple medals at the Doha Asian Games and reaching the finals of the 2011 French Open, where she ultimately claimed her first Grand Slam title in mixed doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi in 2012. Acknowledged as a national icon, she was appointed the brand ambassador for the state of Telangana in 2014 and later became a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia.
Despite facing setbacks, including a right wrist injury that hampered her performance in 2008 and a knee injury that affected her return in 2018, Sania still managed to make a notable comeback in 2020, winning her 42nd WTA doubles title at the Hobart International after a significant break from the sport. She continued to inspire with her resilience and determination, even amid personal challenges. In 2022, as she announced her retirement from professional tennis, Sania reflected on her journey, acknowledging that her body was wearing down and her motivation was waning. Her final appearances were met with both triumph and difficulty, as she competed in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon before stepping away from the game. Beyond tennis, she embraced a new role in the Women’s Premier League as a mentor, showcasing her versatile talents. As her journey continues, Sania remains an influential figure in sports and beyond, not just for her accomplishments on the court but also for her impact as a role model.
