INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Sanath Jayasuriya, a name synonymous with explosive batting and dynamic all-rounder performances, is one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated cricketers. Renowned for his ability to revolutionize One Day International (ODI) cricket, Jayasuriya’s aggressive playing style has left an indelible mark on the sport. His journey began at St. Servatius’ College in Matara, where his burgeoning cricket talent was nurtured under the keen eye of G.L. Galappathy, his college principal, and Lionel Wagasinghe, his cricket coach. In 1988, his exceptional skills shone brightly, earning him the prestigious role of captain for the St. Thomas’–St. Servatius Cricket Encounter Team.
That same year, Jayasuriya’s cricketing prowess was recognized on a broader scale as he was named the ‘Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year’ for the Outstation Segment. His remarkable achievements at the Observer School Cricket Awards included accolades for both “Best All-rounder” and “Best Batsman,” showcasing his all-around abilities on the field. His talent propelled him onto the international stage, where he represented Sri Lanka in the inaugural ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Australia. Shortly thereafter, he was selected for the Sri Lanka ‘B’ Team for a tour in Pakistan, where he astounded observers with two unbeaten double centuries.
Jayasuriya’s entry into the national team came during the 1989–90 tour to Australia, marking the beginning of a legendary career. He played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s historic victory at the 1996 Cricket World Cup, scoring 221 runs—including two half-centuries—and claiming six wickets across six matches. His outstanding contributions earned him the title of Man of the Tournament, cementing his status as a cricketing icon. In recognition of his exceptional talent, he was selected as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World in 1996 and subsequently honored as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1997. Jayasuriya also made history by setting the record for the highest Test score by a Sri Lankan cricketer, achieving a remarkable 340 runs against India in 1997.
From 1999 to 2003, Jayasuriya took on the mantle of leadership, captaining the Sri Lankan cricket team in 117 ODIs and 38 Test matches. His influence extended beyond the cricket field when he ventured into politics as a Matara District candidate for the United People’s Freedom Alliance in 2010, becoming the first cricketer to serve in Parliament while still playing the sport. His multifaceted career continued to flourish, with appearances on the popular Indian dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhlajaa” in 2012 and his appointment as the chairman of the cricket selection committee by the Sri Lanka Cricket Association in 2013. Notably, he held the record for the fastest fifty in ODIs—achieved in just 17 balls against Pakistan in 1996—an impressive feat he maintained for 19 years until it was surpassed in 2015.
Beyond his record-breaking performances, Jayasuriya has been an advocate for social causes, notably as the first cricketer selected as a UN Goodwill Ambassador by UNAIDS for his commitment to preventing AIDS/HIV among youth in Sri Lanka. He has also set records on the field, holding the record for the highest opening partnership in ODI history alongside Upul Tharanga, and gaining recognition as ‘Man of the Match’ on 47 occasions in ODI cricket, as well as ‘Man of the Series’ 11 times. His remarkable career tally includes 6,973 runs at an average of 40.07, comprising 31 half-centuries and 14 centuries, solidifying his legacy as one of the greats of the game.
