INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Sanam Puri’s journey into the world of music can be traced back to his childhood, a time when the sounds of Indian music filled his home, thanks to his father’s passion for the art form. This environment nurtured a love for melodies not only in Sanam but also in his brother, Samar. By the tender age of six, Sanam began to compose music and sing, often crafting original pieces to surprise their parents. It was a familial bond strengthened by creativity, as both brothers engaged in music composition, laying the foundation for what would become a lifelong dedication to their craft.
In 2003, during his school years, the duo, along with their classmate Venky S or Venkat Subramaniyam, took a significant step by forming a band, with Sanam stepping into the role of lead vocalist. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of their musical aspirations, which led them to migrate to India after completing their schooling to pursue higher education. Their college years proved to be both challenging and rewarding. While Sanam and his bandmates dove into the college rock circuit, they met Keshav Dhanraj, who would join them as a drummer. Sanam’s talent flourished during this time as he actively participated in various singing competitions, garnering accolades and building his confidence as an artist. However, college life was not without its trials; Sanam experienced bullying from seniors, a painful chapter he recalls vividly. The emotional torment, characterized by harsh treatment and foul language, left a mark on him, though he found solace in the advice of his parents, who encouraged him to rise above the experience.
Despite his initial reluctance to pursue music as a career, influenced by his brother and mother, Sanam’s passion began to awaken when he moved to Mumbai alongside Samar in 2009. After reconnecting with Venky, the trio formed the SQS Project in 2010 and made waves by winning “Times Music Supastars.” With their manager Ben Thomas, who had previously worked with renowned artists such as Sonu Nigam and Vishal-Shekhar, the band began to gain notable recognition. Their journey continued to blossom with two studio albums, “Samar Sanam” (2011) and “Sanam Revolution” (2018), alongside compilation albums that showcased their artistic versatility. The band’s breakthrough came with their YouTube presence, beginning with a cover of “Ainvayi Ainvayi” in October 2012, which garnered significant attention.
By 2014, the band rebranded itself as “Sanam,” a name that translates to “love” in multiple languages, symbolizing their musical ethos. Their single “Sanam Mennu,” released in 2018 and composed by Sanam himself, earned them the title of Artist of the Month on MTV Beats. The band has amassed an impressive catalog of hit singles including “Tu Yahaan,” “Ek Pyar Nagma,” and “Chala Jata Hoon,” further solidifying their place in the music industry. They also had the extraordinary opportunity to record the Hindi song “Main Hoon” for the Hollywood film “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” showcasing their versatility and appeal. Additionally, the band has made significant contributions to various programs and events, including the renowned Coke Studio and the ICC Cricket World Cup Anthem 2019.
Beyond his musical pursuits, Sanam is known for his personal quirks and interests. His aversion to bees and wasps is well-known among his friends, and he prefers to limit his exposure to other music, believing that listening might influence his own compositions. If he weren’t a singer, he muses that he could have pursued a career as a game designer or a chef. A devoted dog lover, Sanam shares his life with several dogs, including two beloved companions, Choco and Yuki. Through the highs and lows, Sanam Puri has built a remarkable career, driven by passion and resilience, and continues to inspire many with his music and spirit.
