INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Saindhavi’s journey began in the vibrant city of Chennai, where she was nurtured in a loving environment, as evidenced by a cherished childhood photograph with her mother. From a tender age, she exhibited a remarkable passion for music, having started to sing at just five years old. Her early inclinations toward performance were further showcased during her school years, where she eagerly participated in a myriad of extracurricular activities. Whether it was mono acting, handwriting competitions, or engaging in the lively game of dumb charades, she was an enthusiastic presence. Notably, she was an integral member of her school band, laying the groundwork for her future as an artist.
At the age of ten, Saindhavi embarked on a more formal path, beginning her training in Carnatic music. Under the guidance of mentors such as Sandilyan and K.N. Shashikiran, she honed her skills and showcased her talent publicly for the first time at her arangetram, a pivotal solo performance, at the age of twelve. Just a year later, at thirteen, she made her on-stage debut with the song “Snehithane Snehithane” from the film ‘Alai Payuthey’ (2000), marking her entry into the world of film music. Following this performance, she joined a children’s orchestra named ‘Samarpan,’ further enriching her musical repertoire.
While navigating her academic pursuits at Chettinad Vidyashram in Chennai, Saindhavi developed a close bond with her classmate G. V. Prakash Kumar, who would later become a prominent name in the music industry. Their relationship blossomed in December 2001, when they were just teenagers, and Prakash’s heartfelt gift of teddy bears that expressed love with a touch became a symbol of their young romance. Throughout her school years, Saindhavi’s commitment to music was unwavering; she never allowed herself to miss classes or indulge in outings with friends. Her dedication caught the attention of film composer Deva during her tenth grade, leading to an offer to sing three songs for the Tamil film ‘Uyir Ezhuthu.’ Though the film’s release was delayed, this opportunity paved the way for her later success in the industry.
Saindhavi’s professional journey as a playback singer officially began in her eleventh grade with the song “Andangkaka Kondakari” for the film ‘Anniyan’ (2005), which premiered while she was still in her twelfth grade. Over the years, she has contributed her voice to numerous Tamil films, including notable titles such as ‘Kannamoochi Yenada?’ (2007), ‘Madrasapattinam’ (2010), ‘Udhayam NH4’ (2013), ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ (2020), and most recently, ‘Mark Antony’ (2023). She has also expanded her talents to Telugu cinema with songs in films like ‘Sasirekha Parinayam’ (2009) and ‘Lovely’ (2012), as well as ventured into Kannada music with ‘Ullasa Utsaha’ (2010). Saindhavi believes that her experiences in film helped her voice evolve, leading her to take Western vocal music classes from Augustine Paul to further refine her skills.
In addition to her musical prowess, Saindhavi is known for her compassionate spirit. In 2021, she became a Cause Ambassador for the ‘Find A Bed’ initiative, which aimed to assist COVID-19 patients by providing real-time information about hospital bed availability. Her dedication to social causes reflects her deep-rooted desire to give back to the community. More recently, in 2024, she appeared as a judge on the Tamil-language reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Seniors 4,’ where her expertise and passion for music were on full display. Saindhavi has also enjoyed performing during the Margazhi Utsavam, an event she treasures every year, as it allows her to connect with her roots while taking a temporary break from other commitments. Beyond her professional life, she is an avid animal lover, sharing her home with two beloved dogs, Toky and Chilli.
Despite her public successes, Saindhavi’s personal life has seen its share of challenges. After a twelve-year relationship, she and G. V. Prakash Kumar announced their separation on May 13, 2024, citing their need for mental peace and well-being. This poignant moment was shared with her followers on social media, reflecting her openness and authenticity. Through it all, Saindhavi continues to embrace her passion for music and her commitment to social causes, embodying resilience and creativity in every endeavor.
