INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Preity Zinta’s journey from a spirited tomboy in her teenage years to a celebrated figure in Bollywood is one of resilience and determination. Growing up, she was not only known for her athletic inclinations, participating fervently in sports like basketball and tennis, but also for her academic prowess. Remarkably, she topped her English subject in class 10, despite her mother’s last-minute purchase of a textbook just a day before the exam. However, her life took a tragic turn at the age of 13 when she lost her father in a car accident, an event that profoundly impacted her and left her mother severely injured. In the reflective solitude of a boarding school, the young Preity turned to literature, discovering a passion for the works of Shakespeare and Tagore, which would later influence her artistic sensibilities.
The seeds of her illustrious career were sown in unexpected ways. At a party in 1996, a chance encounter with a film director led to an impromptu audition for a TV commercial, marking her entry into the world of modeling. This pivotal moment opened doors to numerous modeling assignments, eventually leading her to audition for acting projects. In 1997, while auditioning alongside a friend, she caught the attention of filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who offered her a role in the shelved film ‘Tara Rum Pum Pum.’ However, it was Kapur’s recommendation to the renowned director Mani Ratnam that paved her way into the limelight with the film ‘Dil Se…’ Her breakout role came shortly after in 1998 with the Hindi film ‘Soldier,’ quickly followed by a lead role in the Telugu film ‘Raja Kumarudu.’ Preity’s ability to captivate audiences was further solidified through her acclaimed performance in ‘Sangharsh’ (1999).
Throughout her career, Preity Zinta has starred in several popular Hindi films, including ‘Kya Kehna’ (2000), ‘Koi… Mil Gaya’ (2003), and ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ (2003), establishing her as one of the most recognizable faces in Bollywood. Her decade was marked not only by cinematic success but also by personal challenges, including a harrowing experience when she testified against her film’s financer in connection with underworld activities, an act of bravery that earned her a bravery award. Later, she navigated the complexities of relationships in the public eye, notably her friendship with Salman Khan, which garnered media attention during the filming of ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke.’
As a multifaceted individual, Preity has also engaged in social causes and media endeavors, writing columns for BBC News Online and participating in numerous charity events. In 2008, she co-owned the IPL team Kings XI Punjab, now known as Punjab Kings, showcasing her business acumen alongside her acting career. Not one to shy away from new challenges, she produced the Hindi web series ‘The Night Manager’ in 2023, adding to her diverse portfolio. Alongside her professional life, she has openly shared her personal struggles with IVF and surrogacy, illustrating her candidness about the emotional complexities of womanhood. Through her various endeavors, Preity Zinta continues to inspire many, embodying a blend of talent, tenacity, and unwavering spirit.
