Prateik Babbar’s journey began in the bustling city of Mumbai, where he was a student at Arya Vidya Mandir High School. During his formative years, he shared classrooms with notable figures such as Karan Tacker and Aditya Roy Kapur, forming bonds that would linger long after school days ended. However, life took a difficult turn when Prateik’s mother passed away due to complications following childbirth. This loss deeply impacted his family dynamics; Prateik’s father, Raj Babbar, moved in with his first wife, while Prateik was sent to live with his maternal grandparents. This arrangement fostered feelings of abandonment in Prateik, who began to feel that his father was emotionally unavailable. In a bid to assert his independence, he even dropped the ‘Babbar’ surname from his identity. Yet, as time passed and he returned to his father’s home following the death of his grandmother, the two began to mend their relationship, slowly rebuilding their bond.
As a child, Prateik showed a flair for sports, particularly cricket, even earning a spot on the under-16 Mumbai team. Interestingly, his youthful aspirations leaned towards music; he dreamt of becoming a lead vocalist in a band, expressing little interest in acting. However, the tides of life pulled him in a different direction. At just 14, he was introduced to marijuana by friends, leading to a troubling dependency that culminated in a stint in rehab at 18. This period was particularly poignant as he was offered a role in the Hindi film ‘Saawariya’ but unfortunately could not accept due to his rehabilitation commitments. After this challenging phase, he began to explore the film industry, starting as a production assistant for renowned director Prahlad Kakar during his college summer breaks, which set the stage for his eventual acting career.
By the age of 19, Prateik had made his mark in the advertising world, featuring in commercials for brands such as Nestlé KitKat and Lava Mobile. He soon transitioned to acting, capturing attention in the Hindi short film ‘The Guitar’ and later in various Hindi films, including ‘Dhobi Ghat’ and ‘Chhichhore.’ His charisma and presence on screen earned him a spot on the Times’ Most Desirable Men list in 2011, further cementing his growing popularity. His foray into television saw him appear in the series ‘MTV Rush’ in 2012, and he later participated in the Box Cricket League, showcasing his love for sports beyond just film.
