INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Mustafizur Rahman’s journey to becoming one of Bangladesh’s cricketing icons is a compelling story, beginning with his childhood dreams that diverged from his father’s aspirations. While his father envisioned a future physician in the family, young Mustafizur found himself more captivated by the thrill of cricket than by academics. Often skipping school to indulge in his passion, he was fortunate to have the unwavering support of his brother, Mokhlesur Rahman, who played a pivotal role in nurturing his talent. Mokhlesur would often take him to local matches, fostering his love for the game. This journey led him to Satkhira Gonomukhi Sangha, where the coach, Altaf, recognized Mustafizur’s natural bowling action and advised him to pursue bowling, setting the stage for his promising career.
Mustafizur’s cricketing potential was soon put on a larger stage when he represented the Bangladesh Under-19 team in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, where he took an impressive eight wickets. His performances caught the attention of selectors, and later that year, he made his debut for Bangladesh A. A pivotal moment in his development came during a practice session with Anamul Haque Bijoy, who encouraged him to experiment with a slower delivery. The result was a breakthrough—a slower cutter that he could bowl at speeds ranging from 120 to 130 kph, which would later become a hallmark of his bowling style. His ODI debut in 2015 was nothing short of sensational, as he took 13 wickets in just three matches against India, garnering significant media attention, particularly for a notable collision with cricketing giants Rohit Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
The year 2016 marked a significant chapter in Mustafizur’s career. He showcased his talents on the global stage during the T20 World Cup in India, finishing as one of the tournament’s leading bowlers with nine wickets at an astonishing average of 9.56. His stellar performances did not go unnoticed, leading to a lucrative contract with SunRisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Acquired for Rs 1.4 crore, he played a crucial role in guiding the team to their maiden IPL trophy that year. His success continued in the IPL, as he was later bought by Mumbai Indians, further solidifying his status as a sought-after player. By 2019, Mustafizur had established himself as a key player for Bangladesh, emerging as the highest wicket-taker for his country in the ODI World Cup, where he claimed 20 wickets across eight matches.
As his career progressed, Mustafizur remained a consistent performer on both domestic and international fronts, participating in various IPL seasons and the T20 World Cups. His 2021 season saw him join the Rajasthan Royals, and he later moved to Delhi Capitals in 2022, showcasing his versatility and resilience in the game. In 2023, he took five wickets in the ODI World Cup held in India, and soon after, he became part of the Chennai Super Kings in the 2024 IPL auction. Notably, he made headlines for his decision to wear the CSK jersey without the logo of a particular alcohol brand due to religious reasons, reflecting his personal beliefs and integrity. Mustafizur is also known for his sportsmanship, rejecting the notion of sledging in cricket; instead, he communicates his aggression through his bowling alone. Throughout his journey, he has remained grounded, speaking only Bangla and maintaining a focus on what truly defines him as a cricketer: his skill and commitment to the game.
