INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Meena Rana’s journey began in the vibrant cultural tapestry of Delhi, where she was born into a Garhwali family. After completing her middle school education, she moved to the picturesque hill station of Mussoorie to live with her sister, Uma. It was here that she honed her academic skills at the revered Mussoorie Girls Inter College. Surrounded by the serene beauty of the mountains, Meena’s passion for music began to blossom, setting the stage for her remarkable career.
At the tender age of 16, Meena took her first steps into the world of performance at the Akashvani Club in Mussoorie, a venue owned by her relatives, Mukesh Lal Kumola and Ram Lal Kumola, who was also her sister’s husband. It was there that she captivated her audience with her rendition of “Nainon Me Badra Chhaye,” a classic by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. Her talent did not go unnoticed; prominent folk singers Mani Bharti and Puran Singh Rawat discovered her at the club and reached out through Ram Lal Kumola with an exciting opportunity. They invited her to lend her voice to their upcoming Garhwali film, “Nauni Pichhadi Nauni,” marking the beginning of her illustrious singing career. In 1991, Meena traveled to Delhi, where she recorded her debut songs, including the memorable tracks “Ni Biwanu Shairu Ma,” “Baith Dola Laadi,” and “Jando Ni Chhaun Mi.”
Despite her early success, Meena candidly admitted in an interview that she had not undergone any formal training in music before her debut. It was only after a few years of performing that she sought to refine her craft through dedicated learning. Over time, she became a household name in Uttarakhand, contributing her voice to numerous popular albums such as “Chand Taro Maa,” “Meri Khati Mitthi,” “Darbar Nirala Sai Ka,” and “Utrakhandi Garhwali Teri Meri Maya.” Her collaborations with esteemed Uttarakhandi artists, including Narendra Singh Negi and Pritam Bharatwan, further enriched her musical repertoire and solidified her status as a prominent figure in the folk music scene.
Meena’s versatility in music is evident in her ability to sing in various languages, including Garhwali, Kumaoni, Bhojpuri, and even 500 songs in Ladakhi. Her passion for folk singing not only resonated within India but also reached international audiences through captivating live performances in countries like Oman, Australia, and the UAE. This commitment to showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Uttarakhand has made her a beloved ambassador of the region’s music.
On a personal note, Meena’s life took a significant turn when she married Sanjay Kumola, the owner of the “Surbhi Multi-Track Sound Studio,” named after their daughter, Surbhi. Interestingly, Sanjay is also her sister’s brother-in-law, and the two shared a musical camaraderie that blossomed into love, thanks to Uma’s insightful matchmaking. Initially aspiring to be a nurse, Meena found her true calling in music, and her journey continues to inspire many as she encapsulates the spirit of Uttarakhand through her melodious voice.
