It was during his formative years that Mayank discovered his passion for cricket, a sport that would soon become central to his life. At just eight years old, he took a significant step towards realizing his dreams by enrolling in the NICS Academy in Patiala. Under the guidance of Mahesh Inder Singh, a former Punjab off-spinner and father of the noted all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi, he began honing his skills. Although he started as a medium-pacer, his coach recognized his potential and encouraged him to focus on leg-spin, a decision that would shape Mayank’s cricketing career.
As Mayank progressed in his training, he crossed paths with former domestic cricketer Munish Bali at a local cricket ground in Baradari, Patiala. This encounter proved pivotal, as Bali took an interest in the young spinner and helped further refine his techniques. Mayank made his T20 debut for Punjab against Jammu & Kashmir on January 14, 2018, during the 2017–18 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy held in Delhi—a significant milestone that marked the beginning of his professional cricketing journey. Later that year, in the IPL auctions, Mayank’s talent garnered attention as he was snapped up by the Mumbai Indians for ₹20 lakhs. His debut match for the franchise was nothing short of spectacular; he claimed three crucial wickets, including that of cricketing legend MS Dhoni while playing against the formidable Chennai Super Kings.
Building on this success, Mayank made his List A debut for Punjab against Haryana on February 7, 2018, in the 2017–18 Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he showcased his prowess by taking three wickets. His remarkable performances continued as he was selected for India’s Emerging team during the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, where he excelled with 12 wickets over four matches.
