INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Masoom Sharma, an acclaimed Indian singer, lyricist, and composer, has carved a niche for himself in the vibrant world of Haryanvi music. He first burst onto the music scene in 2014 with his captivating rendition of “Kothe Chad Lalkaru,” a song that not only highlighted his vocal prowess but also rapidly garnered over 20 million views. This breakthrough was a pivotal moment in his career, establishing him as a notable figure in Haryanvi music. Masoom’s journey in the industry began with the release of his debut music album, “Jalwa Haryana,” which included eight audio tracks. Unfortunately, despite his talent, the album did not resonate with audiences as he had hoped. Undeterred, Masoom, along with his friend Mukesh Grover, launched GV Videos, a music company dedicated to producing and distributing cassettes and DVDs of his songs, paving the way for his future success.
As Masoom continued to develop his unique sound, he released a series of popular tracks that further solidified his status in the music industry. Some of his notable hits include “Gandaas Hori Se” and “Gaddya Me Ek Luhari,” both released in 2016, as well as “Challiya” in 2017 and “Baitha Balad Kade Laat Maar Kai Thaya Na Karte” in 2018. The same year saw the release of “Kille Aala Jaat” and “Bheeda Palang,” all contributing to his growing fan base. His 2021 track “2 Numbari” marked a significant milestone, amassing an impressive 130 million views on YouTube, which greatly amplified his popularity in the Haryanvi music scene.
However, Masoom’s journey has not been without its challenges. Amid the farmers’ protests against controversial farm laws in early 2021, he found himself in the spotlight for meeting Haryana’s then Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. This meeting was perceived negatively by some, leading to intense criticism on social media, with accusations suggesting he was unsupportive of the farmers’ plight. Despite the backlash, Masoom continued to produce music that resonated with his audience. His song “Chand,” released on January 20, 2022, became an instant hit, racking up over 35 million views on YouTube and being featured in more than a million Instagram reels within just a few weeks of its release.
Masoom’s music often engages with current events and cultural narratives, as demonstrated by his controversial song “SYL,” released in June 2022, which delved into the complexities of the Punjab-Haryana water dispute. His commitment to using his platform for meaningful dialogue extended to his invitation by renowned politician Rahul Gandhi to participate in the Bharat Jodo Yatra in December 2022. Musically, Masoom has expressed admiration for fellow Haryanvi artists such as Manisha Sharma and Raju Punjabi, and he has honed his craft under the guidance of his mentor, Pandit Ram Das Sharma. In 2023, he continued to captivate audiences with “Khule Khule Baal,” featuring popular artist Sapna Choudhary, which received over 60 million views. With his energetic performances, including his first international concert in Cyprus, and a penchant for social moments like enjoying hookah and drinks at events, Masoom Sharma remains a dynamic force in Haryanvi music, constantly evolving and engaging with his fans.
