Under Kapil’s stewardship, starting from 1973 when he took on the roles of Chairman and Managing Director of what had become Mohan Meakin Limited, he oversaw the transformation of the company into a notable player in the spirits and beverage market. His leadership continued a proud tradition that had begun with the brewery’s founder, Edward Abraham Dyre, the father of Colonel Reginald Edward Harry Dyer, infamous for his role in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
One of the crowning achievements of Kapil Mohan was the launch of Old Monk Rum on December 19, 1954. This product would not only become a household name in India but also rise to the status of the third-largest selling rum globally, with a devoted following that reveres it as almost sacred—some fans even claim it to be the “next best liquid in the world after water.” Interestingly, despite overseeing a successful brewing company for over four decades, Kapil Mohan was a teetotaller who never consumed alcohol himself. Although Old Monk Rum thrived largely by word of mouth, the mid-2000s brought challenges with increased competition from brands like Golden Eagle Beer and the Vijay Mallya-led United Breweries group. A family rift also surfaced during this period when Rakesh ‘Rocky’ Mohan, Kapil’s nephew, opted to sell the Lucknow venture to the Wave Group, marking a significant shift in the company’s ownership dynamics.
Beyond his contributions to the brewing industry, Kapil Mohan was a multifaceted individual who served as the President of the Municipal Committee of Solan in Himachal Pradesh and as the Chairman and Managing Director of Narinder Mohan Hospital in Ghaziabad.
