INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Kangana Ranaut was born into a well-off Rajput landlord family in the picturesque region of Himachal Pradesh. Growing up in a conservative joint family dominated by male authority figures, she found herself often at odds with the restrictions imposed upon her. This environment nurtured a rebellious spirit within her, illustrated by a telling incident from her teenage years when her father slapped her for the first time at the age of 15. Defiant, she responded, “If you slap me, I will slap you back,” showcasing her strong will early on. Amidst family pressures, particularly from her mother, who hoped for her marriage at 16, Kangana made it clear that she had other aspirations.
Academically gifted and driven, Kangana once aspired to become a doctor, dedicating herself to her studies as a science student by putting in around 18 hours of work each day and achieving an impressive 90% in her intermediate examinations. However, her dreams took an unexpected turn when she failed to clear her pre-medical entrance exam. This setback prompted her to leave her hometown, culminating in her decision to pursue a career in the glamour industry—a choice that her family did not support. In fact, Kangana faced the ultimate rejection when they kicked her out of the house for expressing her desire to enter the world of modeling and acting.
Relocating to Delhi, she initially pursued music but soon joined the Elite Modelling Agency in 2003, marking the beginning of her journey in the modeling world. Before making her film debut, she honed her acting skills in theater and enrolled in Asha Chandra’s acting school in Mumbai. Her breakthrough came when she auditioned for the film “Gangster” (2006), where she faced initial reluctance from Mahesh Bhatt, who was hesitant to cast her. Nevertheless, her talent shone through, leading to her successful debut that not only established her as an actress but also earned her recognition back at her school in Chandigarh, where she was honored as the “Pride of DAV.”
Kangana’s career took off rapidly after “Gangster,” and she later pursued a scriptwriting course in New York, which she had to abandon midway to promote her breakout hit, “Queen.” In 2013, she transitioned to a vegetarian lifestyle and was named “India’s Hottest Vegetarian” by PETA that same year. Her dedication to her craft was recognized with three National Awards for her performances in “Fashion” (2006), “Queen” (2014), and “Tanu Weds Manu Returns” (2015). Besides her acting accolades, Kangana is also a trained Kathak dancer, showcasing her multifaceted talents. Despite her success, she remains grounded; she has seen very few films and does not indulge in television shows, preferring instead to dream of an organic farmhouse and a stable in Shimla for her retirement.
Kangana’s candidness about her experiences within the film industry garnered significant attention, particularly following the tragic death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020. She spearheaded a movement against nepotism in Bollywood, criticizing what she viewed as the industry’s preferential treatment towards insiders over outsiders, which resonated with many, consequently boosting her social media following. Her assertiveness did not go unnoticed, as seen when she linked her experiences to broader industry practices. In September 2020, as she arrived at Mumbai airport, a dramatic stay was placed on the demolition of her office, further fueling her public persona. However, in 2024, Kangana revealed she had to sell her production house, Manikarnika Films, due to financial setbacks. This candid admission reflected the challenges she faced in the industry. Her upcoming film, “Emergency,” has sparked controversy, particularly with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s urging to halt its release due to potential sensitivities. Amidst these challenges, Kangana has also remained entrepreneurial, opening her first restaurant, “The Mountain Story,” in Manali in February 2025, continuing to explore new avenues in her dynamic career.
