INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Gurdas Maan’s journey into the realm of entertainment began during his college years, where he captivated an audience for the first time at an official event for the Punjab State Electricity Board. His performance of “Sajna Ve Sajna” left a profound impression on the audience, resulting in a job offer from the board, marking the start of his illustrious career. Known for his athletic prowess, Maan also showcased his skills outside the performing arts, earning a bronze medal at the National Wrestling Championship and attaining a black belt in Judo. His versatility extended to his active participation in youth festivals across various universities, where he consistently garnered accolades for his singing and acting talents.
As his career progressed, Maan took on the role of writer and director, creating the TV show “POP Time” for Doordarshan in Delhi. His charisma and musical talent caught the attention of producers, leading to a significant breakthrough when he performed “Dil Da Mamla Hai.” This performance led to the recording of the song for a Jalandhar TV station, which aired on December 31, 1980, and became an instant sensation. Maan’s ability to resonate with audiences was further demonstrated with his evergreen hit “Apna Punjab Hove,” for which he received multiple awards, including The Best Song and The Best International Artist at the Asian Pop and Media Awards in Birmingham in 1998.
Throughout his career, Maan has not only been honored with numerous awards but has also experienced personal trials. In 2005, he received the Jury’s Award at the National Film Awards from the President of India, emphasizing his impact on Indian cinema. However, his journey was marked by sorrow when he faced a tragic accident on January 9, 2001, near Rupnagar, Punjab, which claimed the life of his driver and friend, Tejpal. He paid tribute to him with the song “Sawari.” Another car accident in 2007, near Karnal, Haryana, resulted in minor injuries for Maan but left his driver with severe injuries, underscoring the unpredictability of life.
Maan’s artistic expression continued to thrive, notably with his performance of “Ki Banu Duniya Da” alongside Diljit Dosanjh on Coke Studio in 2015, further solidifying his stature in contemporary music. His contributions to the arts have also led him to venture into cinema, where he made a special appearance in the Bollywood film “Veer Zaara.” Every May, he devotes time to perform at the Dera Baba Murad Shah Ji in Nakodar, Punjab, reflecting his deep devotion to Baba Murad Shah Ji and Sai Laddi Shah Ji. His passion for music is mirrored in his prolific output, with over 34 albums and more than 305 songs to his credit, showcasing his linguistic skills in Punjabi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Haryanvi, and Rajasthani.
Maan, affectionately referred to as “The Living Legend,” “Maan Sahab,” and “The Pride of Punjab,” co-owns “Sai Productions” with his wife Manjit Maan in Mumbai and has established a fine-dining restaurant, “The Studio – by Gurdas Maan,” where patrons enjoy live musical performances. His love for Manchester United Football Club adds a personal touch to his multifaceted persona. Despite his success, Maan remains grounded, humorously admitting that ice cream is his weakness, a testament to the balance he maintains between his illustrious career and personal life.
