INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Emiway Bantai, a notable figure in the Indian rap scene, originates from a middle-class orthodox Muslim family with roots tracing back to Karnataka. Growing up, he showed promise academically until he reached the 11th standard, when a newfound passion for rap music began to overshadow his studies. This shift was largely inspired by his fascination with the iconic rapper Eminem. Unfortunately, his dedication to this new passion led to challenges in his academic pursuits, culminating in a failure in his 12th standard, which plunged him into a period of depression. Despite these setbacks, Emiway was determined to carve out a path for himself in music, adopting the stage name “Emiway,” a fusion of Eminem and Lil Wayne (Emi+Way), symbolizing his musical inspirations.
In 2014, Emiway ventured into creating rap videos, initially for sheer enjoyment. The response to his work was unexpectedly positive, prompting him to take the craft more seriously. His musical journey began in earnest with the release of his first YouTube song, “Glint Lock,” featuring Minta, which showcased his English rap skills. To support his budding career without relying on family, Emiway took on a job as a helper at the Hard Rock Cafe, a venue that would later become significant in his career when he received the Radio City Freedom Award. During this time, he also heeded his father’s advice to transition from English rap to Hindi, making his music more accessible to a broader Indian audience. His father, who had aspirations of being an actor, even made an appearance in one of Emiway’s videos, adding a personal touch to his artistic journey.
The turning point in Emiway’s career arrived in 2014 with the release of his first Hindi rap track, “Aur Bantai,” which was met with instant acclaim and established him as a significant voice in the genre. This momentum continued until 2017, when he experienced a major breakthrough through his collaboration with Raftaar on the song “#Sadak.” With this partnership, Emiway further solidified his presence in the rap scene, setting the stage for future endeavors. He also established his own music studio, aptly named Bantai The Studio, which became a creative hub for his projects.
As his popularity soared, Emiway found himself embroiled in a public diss war with fellow rapper Raftaar starting in 2018. The conflict ignited when Raftaar challenged Emiway’s capabilities as a rapper, prompting Emiway to respond with the track “Samajh Mein Aaya Kya.” Raftaar retaliated with “Sheikh Chilli,” to which Emiway countered with “Giraftaar.” This exchange not only showcased their lyrical skills but further propelled Emiway into the spotlight. His journey took another significant leap when he featured in Zoya Akhtar’s acclaimed film ‘Gully Boy’ in 2019, where he lent his rapping talent to the track “Asli Hip-Hop” and demonstrated his acting abilities. Through perseverance and creativity, Emiway Bantai has emerged as a cornerstone of the Indian hip-hop movement, inspiring countless aspiring artists along the way.
