INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Born into a prosperous family with both parents serving as government employees, Chhavi Bhardwaj developed a strong desire to enter the administrative services from an early age. This ambition drove her to pursue her education diligently, ultimately leading her to ace her graduation and embark on an arduous journey of preparation for the highly competitive civil services examinations. Her hard work paid off when she was selected for the prestigious Indian Administrative Service, marking the beginning of her impactful career as an Assistant Collector in 2008.
In 2013, she took on the role of collector for the Dindori district in Madhya Pradesh, a position that had seen a staggering 15 officers come and go within the span of 17 years due to various challenges. Chhavi Bhardwaj, however, was determined to make a difference. Just a month into her tenure, she made headlines when she filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the Chief Municipal Officer for attempting to bribe her with a sum of 50,000 rupees. Her bold stance against corruption not only caught the attention of the media but also showcased her unwavering commitment to integrity and governance.
Reflecting on her time in Dindori, Chhavi expressed profound gratitude for the experience, stating, “It was a great pleasure for me to work in Dindori for more than 2 years. I had a great bond with Dindori’s people, and I am going to keep all the memories of my Dindori posting with me for life-long not just as an officer but as a person too.” During her posting, she was known for her disciplined and organized approach, beginning her days early to maximize her impact in the region. Under her leadership, significant improvements were made in various sectors, from education to social development, further solidifying her reputation as a dedicated public servant.
In April 2016, Chhavi’s career advanced when she was appointed as the Municipal Commissioner in Bhopal. Her effective implementation of the Smart City initiative championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Bhopal to earn the impressive distinction of being the second cleanest city in India during the Swachh Survekshan 2018. Two years later, in a historic move, she was transferred to Jabalpur, becoming the first woman collector of the city—a testament to her groundbreaking contributions to the administrative landscape.
Beyond her role as a renowned corruption-buster, Chhavi Bhardwaj also explored her passion for storytelling, penning her first book, “Like a Bird on the Wire.” Written during her time in Dindori, the book delves into the unfinished love stories of IAS officers while shedding light on the unique challenges and political pressures they face. Her literary endeavor marked her as the first IAS officer to document the lives of her peers, further enhancing her multifaceted legacy within public service and beyond.
