INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Axar Patel’s journey into the world of cricket began in the shadow of familial aspirations. Born to a father who played the game at the district level, Axar was initially inclined towards a different path—one that led to a career as a mechanical engineer. His father and grandmother, however, held a firm belief that he should pursue cricket, a sentiment that would ultimately shape his life’s trajectory. At the age of 13, a turning point arrived when his father introduced him to Sanjaybhai, a BCCI-affiliated coach and former secretary of the Kheda District Cricket Association. Initially a pace bowler, Axar found his true calling when Sanjaybhai encouraged him to explore the art of spin bowling, a decision that would redefine his game.
As he honed his skills, the support of friends played a crucial role in Axar’s burgeoning cricketing career. At 15, his friend Dhiren Kansara recognized his budding talent and urged him to compete in an inter-school tournament. Idolizing the celebrated cricketer Yuvraj Singh, Axar was determined to make his mark on the field. Interestingly, the spelling of his name became a point of intrigue; a clerical error by his school principal transformed “Akshar” into “Axar,” a moniker he would carry for life. By the age of 17, he was appointed captain of the Kheda district’s U-19 team, an honor that came with its share of challenges. After failing to show up for training, he faced the wrath of his coach, but his quick remorse and willingness to atone underscored his commitment to the sport.
Despite his early enthusiasm, Axar’s journey was not without setbacks. Recognizing that physical strength was essential for success in cricket, his father enrolled him in a gym to build his fitness. However, just as he was selected for the Gujarat U-19 team in 2010, an unfortunate accident at home sidelined him for an entire season. This period of adversity pushed Axar to contemplate quitting cricket altogether, but the unwavering support of his grandmother reignited his passion and resolve. His debut Ranji Trophy season in 2012 was modest with only one match, but the subsequent 2013-14 season showcased his true potential. He emerged as one of Gujarat’s most consistent players, amassing 369 runs at an impressive average and taking 29 wickets in just seven matches.
Axar’s ascent continued as he made significant strides on the international stage. In his second first-class match, he achieved his first five-wicket haul against Delhi, claiming the scalps of stalwarts like Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. His contributions helped India’s U23 side clinch the 2013 ACC Emerging Teams Cup, with notable performances including a four-for in the semi-final against the UAE. Making his Twenty20 International debut, Axar’s stellar bowling performance earned him the Man of the Match award. He made headlines during the IPL 2016 season, where he recorded the only hat-trick of the tournament against the Gujarat Lions, taking four wickets in just five balls. As he continued to impress, Axar took his first Test wicket against Joe Root in 2021 and later scored his maiden ODI half-century against West Indies in 2022, showcasing his evolution as an all-rounder.
Even amidst rising success, challenges persisted. In 2023, an injury during the Asia Cup saw him replaced by Ravichandran Ashwin in the Indian squad for the ICC Men’s World Cup. However, Axar’s resilience shone brightly as he played a pivotal role in India’s triumph in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States. His performance in the semifinal earned him the Player of the Match award, with crucial contributions both with the bat and ball in the final. In August 2024, his prowess led to his selection for the Duleep Trophy by the BCCI, where he joined an illustrious lineup of players, further solidifying his status in Indian cricket. From a young boy unsure of his path to a celebrated all-rounder, Axar Patel’s journey is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of family support.
