INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Anubhav Singh Bassi has emerged as one of India’s best-selling stand-up comedians, captivating the youth with his unique blend of nostalgia and humor. As an Indian YouTube sensation, he has garnered a significant following by drawing upon cherished memories from his past, often revolving around his experiences with friends during school and college. This retrospective style of comedy is not just his unique selling proposition (USP); it is a heartfelt reflection of his journey, making his performances relatable and engaging for audiences who share similar backgrounds.
Growing up, Anubhav was anything but ordinary. He was an all-rounder student at Dewan Public School in Meerut, where he showcased his versatility by actively participating in various extracurricular activities. From debating and extempore speaking to singing, dancing, and theatre, he explored every avenue available to him, revealing a desire to embrace diverse experiences. In 2008, he was appointed head boy of his school, a role that undoubtedly honed his leadership qualities and further fueled his ambitions.
Anubhav’s journey to stardom was not a straight path; it was marked by exploration and experimentation with various career options. After initially pursuing a law degree, he briefly entertained the idea of becoming a civil servant by preparing for the UPSC examinations. However, after facing setbacks in both the law profession and a failed venture running a fast-food restaurant, he sought an alternative path in 2017. This marked the turning point in his life when he discovered his passion for stand-up comedy. During this time, he also worked with a start-up and began attending open mic events, where he took a leap of faith by nervously announcing, “Apni bezzati toh kar hi lenge” when asked if he had a script.
Anubhav’s first foray into the world of YouTube began with a stand-up video titled “Cheating,” which he uploaded in 2019. This video catapulted him to instant fame, racking up more than 39 million views and effectively making him a household name overnight. Interestingly, he initially shared a set based on lawyers on his Facebook account, marking his first venture into comedy. Despite his success, Anubhav takes a different approach compared to many comedians, uploading only three stand-up videos on his YouTube channel by 2020. He believes that developing content requires the energy and feedback of a live audience, stating, “For me, to develop content, I need a live audience. Without that, we would never know if the line or the joke is actually funny or not.”
By 2020, Anubhav had amassed 1.88 million subscribers on his channel, even earning the coveted YouTube Golden Button for surpassing the one million mark. His popularity extended far beyond the digital realm, as he embarked on an extensive tour performing his comedy gig “Bas Kar Bassi” across 35 cities, from Surat to Gorakhpur, within just six months. With sold-out shows that resonate with fans, Anubhav Singh Bassi continues to solidify his position as a leading figure in the Indian comedy scene, delighting audiences with a refreshing blend of humor that sparks joy and nostalgia alike.
