INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Anu Aggarwal, a former Indian actor and model, carved an indelible mark in the entertainment industry, beginning her journey with a strong academic foundation. Graduating with a gold medal in Sociology from Delhi University, she initially embarked on a professional career with IMRB in Kala Ghoda, Bombay, in 1987. Her entry into the glamorous world of modeling was serendipitous; a modeling agent discovered her at Churchgate Station in Mumbai, leading to her first assignments that would soon propel her into the limelight.
Her early television career included a notable role in the Doordarshan serial ‘Isi Bahane’ in 1988, which laid the groundwork for her burgeoning popularity. In 1989, she became the face of the ‘Face of Schweppes Indian Tonic,’ which further established her presence in the industry. However, it was her performance in the 1990 Bollywood blockbuster ‘Aashiqui’ alongside Rahul Roy and Deepak Tijori that marked her as the ‘Aashiqui girl.’ Interestingly, Anu revealed in interviews that acting was never her ambition; it was the influential director Mahesh Bhatt who convinced her to take a leap into the world of cinema.
Following her initial success, Anu starred in a series of films such as ‘Ghazab Tamasha’ (1992), ‘King Uncle’ (1993), ‘Khal-Naaikaa’ (1993), ‘Janam Kundli’ (1995), and ‘Return of Jewel Thief’ (1996). She also made her foray into the Tamil film industry with ‘Thiruda Thiruda’ in 1993. As her career blossomed, she became a star endorser and VJ on MTV India’s launch show ‘Oye MTV’ in 1994. Despite her success, Anu began to feel that the film industry was not her true calling. While shooting one of her films in 1995, she realized she preferred a different path. This led to her decision to travel overseas and delve into yoga practice, a significant shift that saw her gradually step away from the glitz of the entertainment world.
However, her life took a tragic turn in 1999 when she was involved in a severe car accident, resulting in multiple fractures and a temporary loss of memory. Anu spent 29 days in a coma, and upon waking, she faced the arduous journey of recovery, which included regaining her physical and mental strength as her face had suffered paralysis. This life-altering experience spurred her to embrace yoga and meditation more profoundly. In her quest for healing, she joined the Bihar School of Yoga, where she immersed herself in yoga practices. After her recovery, Anu re-entered the public sphere as a motivational speaker, notably appearing at TEDx events starting in 2015. That same year, she published her memoir, ‘Anusal Memoir Of A Girl Who Came Back From the Dead,’ which recounts her journey through adversity and recovery.
In the years that followed, Anu embraced her new life with vigor, even competing in amateur power-lifting competitions, showcasing her resilience and determination. Her return to the limelight was marked by an appearance on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ in February 2020, alongside her former ‘Aashiqui’ co-stars Rahul Roy and Deepak Tijori. Through her multifaceted experiences, Anu Aggarwal stands as a testament to the strength of the human spirit, navigating the volatile world of fame, personal triumphs, and the pursuit of inner peace.
