INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Abdul Samad, a spirited cricketer hailing from a small town in Jammu, has made a name for himself in the competitive landscape of domestic cricket, particularly known for his explosive power-hitting abilities. His journey into the spotlight began when he represented Sunrisers Hyderabad during the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2020. Like many aspiring Indian cricketers, Abdul’s passion for the sport was met with initial skepticism from his mother, who urged him to prioritize his studies over cricket. However, it was his father—a former national-level volleyball player and a decent fast-bowler in his youth—who recognized Abdul’s talent and potential. With his father’s unwavering support, Abdul was enrolled in Jammu’s MA Stadium Coaching Centre, a decision that would prove pivotal in shaping his cricketing career.
Abdul’s early cricketing journey saw him donning the jerseys of Jammu & Kashmir’s under-14, under-16, and under-19 teams. Despite his presence in these junior teams, his performances were marked by inconsistency; while his strike rate was commendable, he often found himself throwing away his wicket in an attempt to hit big. This tendency hindered his ability to build innings with the necessary patience and composure, qualities that are essential for success in cricket. However, everything changed when he came under the mentorship of Irfan Pathan, a former Indian international cricketer. Under Pathan’s guidance, Abdul began to refine his game, and this was evident when he made a remarkable entry into domestic cricket, scoring 76 runs off 51 balls in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 match against Nagaland on February 21, 2019.
As he continued to progress, Abdul made his List-A cricket debut on September 27, 2019, during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, playing against Rajasthan. He followed this with his Ranji Trophy debut against Uttarakhand on December 9, 2019, where he quickly established himself as a key player for Jammu & Kashmir. Demonstrating his prowess, he emerged as the highest run-scorer for the team in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy season, amassing 592 runs across ten matches. His standout performance in the quarter-finals against Karnataka on February 23, 2020, highlighted his ability to perform under pressure, as he smashed several boundaries to lead his team forward.
The year 2019 was a turning point for Abdul, as he attended selection trials for three IPL franchises. His talent did not go unnoticed, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad recognized his potential, acquiring him for his base price of Rs. 20 lakh ahead of the IPL 2020 season. This achievement made him the fourth player from Jammu & Kashmir to participate in the prestigious T20 tournament. On September 29, 2020, he made his debut against the Delhi Capitals, showcasing his striking capabilities by hitting the ball over the boundary rope. Throughout the IPL 2020 season, Abdul played a total of 11 matches, proving to be a valuable asset for his team by finishing several crucial games with impressive performances.
Beyond cricket, Abdul is a multi-talented individual with a passion for music. His vocal charm has captivated many, and he has even shared his singing talent with fans, performing the Punjabi song “Kalla Chann” by Sharry Mann. As he continues to carve out his path in the cricketing world, Abdul Samad remains a vibrant figure, embodying the spirit of determination and passion both on and off the field.
