INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Viresh Kumar Bhawra, a distinguished Indian Police Service officer hailing from the 1987 batch of the Punjab cadre, has carved out a notable career marked by dedication and service. His educational journey began at the National Institute of Technology in Kurukshetra, where he not only excelled academically, topping his university with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from 1980 to 1985, but also engaged actively in social service as a volunteer with the National Service Scheme (NSS). This commitment to both personal and community development laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors in law enforcement.
After completing his degree, Bhawra took on the role of an engineer and system analyst-cum-programmer at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited in New Delhi in 1985, where he contributed for nearly two years. However, his passion for public service soon redirected his path, leading to his appointment as the Additional Director General of Police in Punjab’s Chandigarh area just two years later, in 1987. Bhawra’s leadership and commitment to the force earned him recognition when he, alongside Inspector General Ishwar Chander, was awarded the prestigious President’s Police Medal for distinguished service on Republic Day in 2015, underscoring his impact on public safety and law enforcement.
In July 2017, he further demonstrated his capability by taking on the responsibilities of the Director General of Police for Information Technology & Telecom, Provisioning & Modernisation within the Punjab Police. His ascent in the ranks culminated on January 8, 2022, when he was appointed as the third Director General of Police of Punjab. The official notification came from the Union Public Service Commission, which had recommended him for the role, alongside other notable officers. Upon his appointment, Bhawra replaced IPS Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, who faced criticism for issues regarding the security of the Prime Minister, marking a new chapter in Punjab’s law enforcement leadership.
Upon assuming his responsibilities as DGP, Bhawra outlined a clear agenda focused on eradicating the drug menace and terrorism plaguing the state, emphasizing a people-centric approach to policing and public service delivery. He recognized the significant role of technology in modern crime investigations, vowing to leverage it to enhance the efficiency of the Punjab Police. Beyond his professional pursuits, Bhawra is a family man, married to Anjali Bhawra, an IAS officer currently serving as the secretary of the Department of Empowerment. Proficient in several languages, including English, Hindi, Punjabi, Assamese, and French, he embodies the spirit of a global citizen. His love for travel with family and friends further enriches his life, echoing his favorite adage: “Give to the world the best you have and the best will come back to you.”
