INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From a young age, Vikrant Gupta harbored a dream of becoming a cricketer. His passion for the sport blossomed early during his school days, where he showcased his talent as a member of the Under-15 cricket team in Chandigarh. This foundation in competitive cricket laid the groundwork for his subsequent participation at the university and state levels during his college years, allowing him to sharpen his skills and further fuel his ambition to excel in the sport he adored.
After completing his graduation, Vikrant began pursuing a Master’s degree in English at Panjab University. However, his academic journey took an unexpected turn when he decided to drop out midway, opting instead to delve into the field of mass communication. This pivotal choice set the stage for a promising career in sports journalism. In 1992, he garnered recognition after receiving a certificate from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for being a member of the Under-19 Punjab team that triumphed in the prestigious Cooch Behar Trophy. His cricketing journey continued to flourish when he participated in the All India Inter University Rohinton Baria Finals in Tirunelveli in 1995, further cementing his status as an emerging talent.
Vikrant’s professional trajectory took a significant leap in May 1997 when he began his career as a Special Correspondent at The Indian Express. His tenure there lasted until January 2003, after which he transitioned to the India Today Group as a Senior Editor (Sports) for Aaj Tak and India Today. His role with Aaj Tak allowed him to combine his two passions: cricket and journalism. As a vital member of the Aaj Tak cricket team, Vikrant not only played in local tournaments, including the Lionel Premier League in 2017, but also covered major cricketing events such as the 2017 Champions Trophy, the 2007 World Cup, and the 2018 Asia Cup.
Vikrant’s media presence expanded further when he first appeared as a special guest contestant on the popular Indian television game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, in October 2014. His expertise subsequently led to his appointment on the show’s expert panel. Additionally, he began hosting “SalaamCricket,” a Hindi cricket talk show for India Today, during which he had the opportunity to interview renowned international cricketers like Shane Warne, Brian Lara, and Michael Clarke. In 2018, he showcased his versatility as a host by leading the Mind Rocks Youth Summit for India Today, where he interviewed Punjabi singer Parmish Verma. Beyond his professional endeavors, Vikrant is a fitness enthusiast who regularly shares his workout routines and yoga practices on social media. He also enjoys traveling and has explored picturesque locations in countries like France, Switzerland, and Australia. A multifaceted personality, Vikrant is an accomplished horse rider and proudly owns a bat signed by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, further intertwining his life with the sport he loves.
