Sippy Sidhu was a talented Indian national-level rifle shooter who carved a niche for himself in both the sports arena and the legal field. Known for his dedication and skill, Sidhu began his shooting journey during his university years, where he trained alongside renowned shooter Abhinav Bindra. His commitment to the sport resulted in multiple accolades, including a gold medal at the Punjab National Games in 2001, which he shared with Bindra. For over 15 years, he proudly represented Punjab in various rifle shooting competitions, showcasing his exceptional talent and earning respect in the shooting community. In addition to his sporting achievements, Sidhu also contributed to the Paralympic Committee of India as the joint secretary, further solidifying his dedication to sports.
Following his passion for law, Sidhu was determined to transition from sports to a career in the legal domain. He took a three-year leave from his position with the Punjab Police, where he had been posted on a sports quota, to pursue a law degree. This journey culminated in the establishment of the Sippy Sidhu Law Firm in Chandigarh, where he offered his legal expertise. As a member advocate of the Supreme Court of India, Sidhu was celebrated not only for his shooting skills but also for his contributions to the legal profession.
Tragically, Sippy Sidhu’s life was cut short on September 20, 2015, when he was shot dead in Sector 27 Park in Chandigarh. His body was discovered the following day by a passerby, prompting an investigation that would reveal dark complexities. In the wake of his murder, Sidhu’s family, particularly his mother, alleged involvement from a woman named Kalyani Singh, whom Sippy had reportedly spurned romantically. His mother claimed that Kalyani’s mother, Sabina, had leveraged her influence to shield Kalyani from scrutiny. The family’s anguish was evident as they participated in justice marches and candlelight vigils, vowing to seek justice for Sippy.
The investigation into Sidhu’s murder took on a heightened sense of urgency when, on January 22, 2016, the Chandigarh administration recommended a CBI probe. As the investigation unfolded, the CBI announced rewards for information leading to the arrest of his killer, reflecting the case’s growing public interest. Nearly seven years after the murder, Kalyani was apprehended in Sector 42, Chandigarh, having reportedly evaded authorities and displayed deceptive behavior during the investigation. The CBI suggested that her motivation stemmed from a combination of personal grievances, including a rejected marriage proposal from Sippy’s family and the distressing exposure of her private photos. The investigation revealed serious lapses by police officials, leading to concerns about evidence destruction that delayed justice in this tragic case, leaving Sippy Sidhu’s family in their relentless pursuit for truth and closure.
