Sikandar Raza, a cricketer whose journey is as captivating as his performances on the field, was born in Pakistan but has made Zimbabwe his home and career. His passion for cricket was nurtured in his early years, inspired by his father and uncles, who aspired to play for Pakistan. However, his childhood dreams took a different turn when, while in school, he aimed to become a fighter pilot. Raza’s exceptional potential saw him selected from a pool of 10,000 students to attend the prestigious Pakistan Air Force boarding school. Unfortunately, his aspirations were dashed when he did not pass the Lens Opacity test during the final medical evaluation.
In 2002, Raza and his family relocated to Zimbabwe from Pakistan, where he began to play cricket at the amateur level. His talent quickly shone through, garnering attention as he captured the interest of national selectors. Yet, his Pakistani nationality posed a significant barrier to his selection for the Zimbabwe national cricket team. In a pivotal moment for his career, the Zimbabwean government granted him citizenship in 2011, allowing Raza to fully embrace his new identity and pursue his cricketing ambitions.
Raza’s cricketing journey has been marked by significant achievements across various international leagues, including the Afghanistan Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, and Pakistan Premier League. His prowess on the field was underscored in July 2014 when he, alongside Hamilton Masakzada, set a remarkable record for the highest opening partnership in Zimbabwe’s history, scoring 224 runs against Afghanistan at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Raza’s contribution was monumental, as he scored 141 runs, establishing himself as the highest run-scorer for Zimbabwe in an ODI match at that time. Over the years, he has represented Zimbabwe against formidable teams such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, and South Africa, solidifying his place in the annals of cricket history.

Raza’s outstanding contributions continued in 2018 when he was awarded the Player of the Tournament at the ODI World Cup Qualifiers, scoring 319 runs and capturing 15 wickets. He reached a significant milestone in March 2020 by playing his 100th ODI match. However, 2021 brought challenges when he experienced severe pain in his right arm, leading to concerns about a bone marrow infection and unfounded rumors of cancer, which ultimately proved to be false.
