INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Sandesh Jhingan’s journey in football began in his formative years, where he showcased his talent while representing the Chandigarh Union Territory team at the under-19 level. His efforts culminated in a significant victory as he helped the team clinch the prestigious B.C. Roy Trophy. This early success paved the way for further achievements, including a remarkable stint at St. Stephen’s Academy, where he played a crucial role in guiding the team to the Southeast Asian finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup in 2008. These foundational experiences laid the groundwork for Sandesh’s burgeoning football career.
In November 2011, Sandesh embarked on a professional journey by joining United Sikkim FC in the I-League 2nd Division. Playing alongside iconic players such as Bhaichung Bhutia and Renedy Singh, he was instrumental in leading the club to promotion to the I-League after a successful campaign in the 2012 season. His debut in the I-League came on October 6, 2012, when he not only played the entire match against Salgaocar but also scored the decisive goal, ensuring a thrilling 3-2 victory for United Sikkim. This performance marked the beginning of his ascent in Indian football, leading to his debut for Mumbai FC on December 7, 2013, where he continued to impress.
Sandesh’s prowess on the field quickly caught the attention of national selectors. On September 15, 2014, he made his international debut for India U23 against the United Arab Emirates, showcasing his potential on a larger stage. His career took a significant step forward when he was loaned to Sporting Goa for the 2014-15 season, making his debut against Mumbai FC on February 8, 2015. The following season in the Indian Super League was a landmark moment for Sandesh, as he became the highest-paid Indian player in the league after being retained by Kerala Blasters for over ₹10 million. This recognition was complemented by his senior international debut on March 12, 2015, in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nepal, where he played a full match and contributed to India’s 2-0 victory.
Continuing to evolve, Sandesh joined DSK Shivajians on loan from Kerala Blasters on March 4, 2016, making an immediate impact by scoring his first international goal against Turkmenistan shortly thereafter. His consistent performances in the 2016 Indian Super League season as a right-back solidified his reputation. On January 12, 2017, he was loaned to Bengaluru FC, where he made an impressive debut against Mumbai FC, coming on as a substitute. He soon made his mark by scoring in the AFC Cup against Mohun Bagan, helping Bengaluru FC secure a 2-1 victory. Sandesh’s contributions culminated in winning his first top-tier silverware with Bengaluru FC in the 2016-17 Federation Cup final against Mohun Bagan.
In July 2017, Sandesh signed a long-term contract with Kerala Blasters, establishing himself as the highest-paid defender in the league. His leadership was recognized when he was appointed captain of the club in November 2017, a position he held until an unfortunate ACL injury sidelined him for the entire 2019-20 season. Despite this setback, Sandesh remained dedicated to his fitness and nutrition, signing with the nutrition company MyProtein in 2020. After parting ways with Kerala Blasters on mutual consent in May 2020, he signed a five-year deal with ATK Mohun Bagan, becoming one of the team’s five captains. Sandesh made history by joining Croatian First Football League side Šibenik in August 2021, becoming the first Indian footballer to play in the Croatian league, although a calf injury shortly after signing sidelined him for two months.
Returning to ATK Mohun Bagan in January 2022, Sandesh showcased his resilience by playing nine games that season. His influence in the world of football extended beyond the pitch when Adidas signed him as their brand ambassador in February 2022. On August 14, 2022, he joined Bengaluru FC on a one-year deal, further cementing his status as a prominent figure in Indian football. Sandesh Jhingan’s journey is not just a testament to his skills on the field but also to his unwavering commitment and passion for the sport, alongside a keen awareness of his health and lifestyle choices, such as avoiding gluten and dairy in his diet.
