INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Sandeep Narwal, a talented Kabaddi player, hails from the vibrant town of Sonepat in Haryana, where he discovered his passion for the sport at a young age. Growing up in this culturally rich region, he quickly made a name for himself in local junior-level Kabaddi, earning numerous medals that highlighted his exceptional skills. His commitment and talent soon caught the attention of the selectors, leading to his selection for the Haryana team. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of his journey in competitive Kabaddi, as he regularly participated in U-14, U-17, and U-19 championships, laying a strong foundation for his future in the sport.
As Sandeep progressed in his Kabaddi career, he was chosen by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to become an all-rounder, further enhancing his versatility on the mat. His ambitions led him to Gandhinagar, where he trained under the watchful eye of coach Jayaveer Sharma. Under Sharma’s guidance, Sandeep honed his skills in preparation for national-level championships. By 2011, he had reached a significant milestone, representing India in the Junior Asiads. Two years later, he showcased his talent on a larger stage, competing in the Senior Nationals for Haryana, further establishing himself as a formidable player.
Sandeep’s entry into the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) was marked by his association with the Patna Pirates during its first three seasons. Initially flying under the radar, he soon made a significant impact, captivating selectors with his robust performances and earning a place in the national camp. In Season 2, he took on the role of captain for the Patna Pirates, leading the team to the semi-finals. His remarkable talent was recognized in Season 3 when he was awarded the Best Defender of the Tournament, thanks to his impressive tally of 53 successful tackles. Subsequently, he represented the Telugu Titans in Season 4, continuing to showcase his prowess as a corner defender with his signature ‘Block’ move.
Sandeep’s journey continued to flourish as he was picked by the Puneri Paltan for a hefty sum of Rs. 72.6 lakh in Season 5 of the PKL. His performances earned him retention for the following season, during which he represented India in the 2016 South Asian Games and the Kabaddi World Cup held in Ahmedabad, contributing to India’s victory in the finals. He then transitioned to U Mumba in Season 7, where he was bought for Rs. 89 lakhs and served as the vice-captain, forming a notable partnership with Iran’s Fazel Atrachali. His competitive spirit led him to earn a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games, despite a tough semifinal match against Iran, and he also participated in the Dubai Masters that same year.
Beyond the mat, Sandeep Narwal is known for his love of fitness and has a penchant for volleyball, often stating he could forgo meals but not his beloved sport. His social media reflects his dedication to fitness, showcasing his gym sessions and his life outside of Kabaddi. An avid dog lover, Sandeep often shares moments with his two pet dogs, providing a glimpse into his personality beyond sports. With a career marked by achievements, dedication, and a passion for both Kabaddi and life, Sandeep Narwal continues to inspire both fans and aspiring athletes alike.
