INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From a young age, Rishabh Pant dreamt of becoming a cricketer, drawing inspiration from the legendary Australian wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist. His passion for the sport led him to make a pivotal move at the age of 12, relocating from his hometown of Roorkee to Delhi in pursuit of professional coaching. In the bustling cricket scene of the capital, he initially joined the Sonnet Club. His journey, however, was fraught with challenges, as he faced discrimination in the Rajasthan cricket community when he represented the region at the U-14 and U-16 levels. This led to him being expelled from an academy, compelling him to shift his focus back to Delhi, where he began to flourish. His talent shone brightly in various age-level tournaments, culminating in his impressive first-class debut for Delhi in 2015.

Rishabh’s ascent in cricket was marked by significant mentorship, particularly from the legendary Rahul Dravid, coach of the India-A team. Dravid dedicated countless hours to refine Pant’s batting skills, helping him evolve into a formidable player. His career took a major leap in 2016 when the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) acquired him for ₹1.9 crore, a substantial increase from his initial base price of ₹10 lakhs. That same year, he made headlines by setting the record for the fastest fifty in U19 World Cup history, achieving the milestone in just 18 balls, further cementing his status as a rising star.

Tragedy struck in 2017 when Rishabh’s father passed away from a cardiac arrest. Just two days after the loss, he showcased remarkable resilience by scoring 57 runs for the Delhi Daredevils in an IPL match. Known for his light-hearted demeanor and emotional depth, Rishabh also made headlines for his tumultuous relationship with actress Urvashi Rautela, which ended in a public conflict on social media. Interestingly, aside from his cricketing prowess, he is a skilled gymnast, though this aspect of his talent remains lesser-known.

In 2018, as Rishabh continued to make waves in the IPL, he was honored with the ‘Emerging Player of the Season’ award for his spectacular performance, where he became the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament, amassing 684 runs and hitting a staggering 37 sixes and 68 fours. However, his debut Test series against England that same year was marred by an unusual record; he faced 29 balls without scoring, tying for the longest duck in Indian Test history alongside notable players Suresh Raina and Irfan Pathan. Despite the ups and downs, his career flourished when he was appointed captain of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 14th IPL season, making him one of the youngest captains in the league’s history.

Rishabh’s journey took another turn when he was appointed as the state brand ambassador for Uttarakhand by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in December 2021. However, a life-threatening incident occurred on December 30, 2022, when he was involved in a severe car accident on the Delhi-Haridwar highway. His vehicle collided with the divider, rolled over, and burst into flames. Thanks to the quick actions of local villagers and police, he was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital in Dehradun. His extraordinary resilience was further exemplified when, in 2025, he was named Vice-Captain of the Indian Test team by the BCCI. Shortly thereafter, he made history against England by scoring 134 runs in the first innings and following it up with another century, solidifying his reputation as a key player in Indian cricket.
