INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Rasikh Salam’s journey in cricket began with a humble start, playing his first match as a young boy with dreams that would soon take him far beyond the picturesque valleys of Kashmir. In those formative years, he received invaluable coaching from his cousins, Nadeem Dar and Mubeen Koul, who ignited his passion for the sport and helped refine his skills. It wasn’t long before Rasikh’s talent caught the attention of notable figures in cricket, especially when he was just 17 years old. During a talent hunt drive in Kashmir, he was spotted by former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan and Milap Mewada, the then coach of Jammu and Kashmir, marking the beginning of a promising cricketing career.
On October 3, 2018, Rasikh made his List A debut for Jammu and Kashmir in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy against Rajasthan, showcasing his potential on a larger stage. This was followed by his first-class debut on December 30, 2018, in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, further solidifying his status as a rising star in the cricketing world. His cricketing prowess extended beyond traditional formats, as Rasikh also debuted in the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on February 22, 2019. Notably, he became the third player from Jammu and Kashmir to be picked in the IPL auctions, following in the footsteps of Parvez Rasool and Mansoor Dar, which underscored his growing reputation.
In 2019, Rasikh took a significant step in his career by debuting for the Mumbai Indians, a prestigious franchise in the Indian Premier League. However, his journey was met with unexpected challenges when he faced a two-year ban from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), preventing him from participating in any BCCI-associated tournaments. During this challenging period, he remained committed to his growth as a cricketer, receiving mentorship and training from the Mumbai Indians under a scholarship program at their Reliance training facility in Navi Mumbai. This experience included traveling to the UAE with the team as a net bowler, allowing him to maintain a connection with the sport he loved.
Rasikh’s hard work and perseverance paid off when he returned to the IPL arena in 2022, as Kolkata Knight Riders acquired him from the Mumbai Indians for his base price of Rs. 20 lakhs. This marked a new chapter in his professional journey, leading up to a memorable moment in 2024 when he took his first IPL wicket of Sai Sudarshan against the Gujarat Titans. Coming into the match as an impact substitute, Rasikh seized the moment by claiming three wickets, a feat that not only showcased his talent but also marked his resilience in overcoming obstacles. Beyond the cricket field, Rasikh has a passion for cooking, specializing in mutton dishes, and enjoys trekking in the majestic mountains, alongside indulging in football and volleyball, highlighting his well-rounded personality and zest for life.
