In 1999, at the tender age of eighteen, Mukesh Sahani embarked on a transformative journey from his village to the bustling streets of Mumbai, driven by a desire to carve out a career for himself. His initial foray into the professional world was as a salesman for a cosmetic brand, but it was not long before he discovered a calling that aligned more closely with his creative aspirations. In 2008, Mukesh Sahani’s path took a significant turn as he returned to his roots armed with a renewed sense of purpose. Witnessing the stark realities of poverty and the struggles faced by the Nishad community, also known as Mallahs or fishermen, he felt compelled to take action. This deep-seated concern spurred him to establish the Sahani Samaj Kalyan Sanstha in 2010, with offices in Darbhanga and Patna aimed at uplifting his community. His efforts focused on raising awareness about vital issues such as education, reservation, and the rights of the Nishads. The culmination of his advocacy came on February 16, 2014, when he orchestrated the influential Nishad Society Rights Conference at Raj Maidan in Darbhanga, an event that became a landmark moment known as the ‘Nishad Revolution of Bihar.’
His impactful work did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his contributions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed him as a key campaigner for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2014 general elections and the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections. However, Sahani later distanced himself from the party, expressing disappointment over their failure to fulfill a commitment that would classify the Nishad community as part of the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. Undeterred, he founded the Nishad Vikas Sangh in 2015, aiming to operate at the district level throughout Bihar. His political journey saw him secure a seat in the Bihar Legislative Council under the BJP’s quota in January 2021, where he served until July 2022. In February 2023, he was given Y+ security by the Indian government, a gesture believed to be an attempt to garner his allegiance toward the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
As he continued to carve out his political identity, Mukesh Sahani openly articulated his ambition to assume the role of Chief Minister of Bihar. In a candid interview in March 2023, he stated, “Only if we have dreams can we fulfill them,” challenging the notion of leadership by highlighting the successful political journeys of figures like Jitan Ram Manjhi and Lalu Prasad. He voiced the aspirations of the Nishad-Mallah community, which comprises over 15% of the population in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, arguing for his rightful place in leadership. His rallies have been marked by a commitment to the legacy of Phoolan Devi, a notable figure associated with the Nishad community, as well as innovative campaigning methods. In July 2023, he launched a specially designed rath for a 101-day journey, costing around Rs 3-4 crores, moving through the state with modern amenities while emphasizing the power of the vote. His compelling rhetoric often draws parallels with cultural icons, urging the electorate to recognize their voting power and to pledge against vote-selling, thus reinforcing his dedication to the community he represents.
