Opinions: Hindu Rashtra In September 2023, Mohan said that India is a Hindu Rashtra, and it did not matter if people from other religion believed in it or not. He also said that other religions can prosper in a Hindu Rashtra as Hinduism teaches to make good bonds and live with respect. Before this statement, in 2019, he claimed that creation of a Hindu Rashtra was “non-negotiable.” [1] Hindustan Times [2] India Today Population In 2022, he said that India’s large population is beneficial for the nation; however, such a large population also poses challenges that can be addressed by the government by implementing laws to regulate population control. S. Y. Quraishi, former chief election commissioner, supported his views by saying that Mohan’s views are balanced and not targeting one particular religion. [3] The Indian Express The LGBTQ Community Bhagwat is known for his liberal views and support for the LGBTQIA+ community in India. In October 2019, he said that the community should be seen as a “variation” rather than an “abnormality.” He also talked about their integration into the society. Before 2014, the RSS did not endorse the community. [4] Firstpost Views on Other Religions During an event in 2017, Bhagwat claimed that Hinduism was the only religion to have existed before the emergence of other religions. He also said that all other religions emanated out of Hinduism. He also claimed that the RSS was against religion conversions but accepted anyone who wished to become a Hindu. He said, “Hinduism was the only true religion in the world and other religions were just sects which emerged from Hinduism. People hailing from other sects were originally Hindus who had drifted to these sects over the course of time. RSS does not support conversion but our doors are open for those who want to come back to Hinduism from other sects.” [5] The Times of India The Indian Way of Life Bhagwat claimed in 2016 that the Indian way of life is the only way to save Earth from destruction. He also talked about including “Hindu thought in the character of Bharat” and solidifying the Hindu society in the world. [6] News18 Reservation System Mohan has changed his opinion on the reservation system many times. In 2015, he expressed his disapproval of giving reservation to certain castes and asked the government to re-consider it by establishing a committee. While giving an interview, he said, “Form a committee of people genuinely concerned about the interest of the whole nation and committed to social equality… They should decide which categories require reservation, and for how long. Like autonomous commissions, this non-political committee should be the implementation authority; political authorities should supervise them for honesty and integrity.” In 2023, Bhagwat supported the system by referring to the marginalization of certain sects of the society for over 2000 years. He further added, “Until we provide them equality, some special remedies have to be there, and reservations is one of them. Hence, reservations have to continue till there is such discrimination. We at the RSS give all support to the reservations provided in the Constitution.” [7] The Indian Express

INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Mohan Bhagwat’s journey began with a vibrant passion for the arts, particularly theatre and singing, during his college years. Engaging actively in various cultural events, he garnered numerous accolades, with his impressive collection of medals proudly displayed at his ancestral home in Chandrapur. Following his graduation, he pursued a career in veterinary medicine, where he initially worked as an intern at a government hospital in Chamorshi, Chandrapur Zilla Parishad for six months. His dedication and skills soon earned him a full-time position at the same facility. However, after spending a year and a half as a veterinary doctor, Mohan made a pivotal decision to resign in order to further his education with a postgraduate degree in veterinary sciences.
His academic pursuits, however, took an unexpected turn when he dropped out of the postgraduate program in late 1975 to become a Pracharak, or full-time promoter, for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This shift was reportedly influenced by his father, Madhukar Rao, who played a crucial role in shaping Mohan’s ideological inclinations. During this period of political turbulence in India, he engaged in underground activities opposing the government and successfully evaded arrests under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) multiple times. His leadership and organizational skills came to the forefront during the Emergency, allowing him to gain prominence within the RSS.
After the Emergency ended in 1977, Mohan Bhagwat continued to serve as a pracharak in Nagpur and Vidharba, where he is credited with revitalizing the RSS, especially in Bihar by significantly expanding its base. His dedication and effectiveness caught the attention of the organization’s leadership, leading to a transfer to Gujarat. In 1999, he was entrusted with the important responsibility of formulating new policies for the RSS pracharaks. By 2000, he succeeded H. V. Seshadri as the Sarkaryawah (General Secretary) of the RSS, a position he was reappointed to in 2003 and 2006. His ascent culminated in 2009, when he became the chief of the RSS. One of his notable early reforms was instituting a rule that barred anyone over the age of 75 from holding the organization’s leadership position.
Under Mohan Bhagwat’s stewardship, the RSS expanded its social and cultural projects, focusing on rural development, education, and healthcare. He has been a vocal advocate for the Swadeshi movement, which emphasizes self-reliance and national pride. His leadership also aimed to strengthen the ties between the RSS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), fostering cooperation in broader national issues. Bhagwat has traveled extensively to countries with significant Indian diaspora, engaging with communities on topics related to Hinduism and Indian culture. A skilled speaker, he has addressed various pressing issues, including national security and the future of India through the lens of RSS ideology. Additionally, he has authored several books that reflect his thoughts and insights, including “The Role of Youth in Nation Building” and “Yashasvi Bharat.”
Amidst his public engagements, Mohan Bhagwat maintains a personal lifestyle that eschews alcohol and smoking, while also showcasing his artistic talents as a trained musician and singer. In recognition of potential threats against him, he was granted a Z+ VVIP security cover by the Government of India in June 2015, making him one of the most safeguarded individuals in the country. Despite facing misinformation on social media, including fabricated claims about his wealth and statements, he has remained focused on his work and responsibilities. His connection to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was trained by his father in the RSS, further emphasizes the intertwining of their political and ideological paths. Mohan Bhagwat’s enduring commitment to the RSS and his multifaceted contributions reflect his influential role in contemporary Indian society.
