INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Jaspal Rana is a distinguished Indian shooter and a renowned shooting coach, celebrated for his remarkable achievements in the sport. His illustrious career includes winning gold medals at prestigious events such as the 1994 Asian Games, the 1998 Commonwealth Games, the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and numerous other competitions. Jaspal’s journey into the world of shooting began at the tender age of 10, inspired by his father, Narayan Singh Rana, who served as an official in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). As his first coach, Narayan instilled in Jaspal both the skills to handle pistols and rifles, although it was the pistol that ultimately captured his focus and passion.
One of the defining moments in Jaspal’s career occurred during the World Shooting Championships in Milan, where he faced significant adversity. Despite suffering from a painful boil on his knee that required surgery, he was determined to compete. His resilience paid off as he not only clinched his first international medal in the junior section but also set a junior world record in the 25-meter pistol event. This triumph strongly defined his career, with Jaspal reflecting on the significance of this achievement amidst his long journey of victories and setbacks. Following the event, he sought medical attention, only to learn that his determination had led him to gold and a new world record.
The accolades continued for Jaspal Rana, who maintained his winning streak by securing another gold medal at the 1994 Asian Games held in Hiroshima, Japan. In recognition of his outstanding performances, he was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award that same year. His prowess in the sport was further highlighted during the 46th World Shooting Championship (Junior Section), where he set a record in the 25-meter centerfire pistol with an impressive score of 590 points—a feat he had previously matched in national competitions. His consistent excellence in shooting earned him the Padma Shri award in 1997, solidifying his status as one of India’s top athletes.
In addition to his sporting achievements, Jaspal Rana ventured into politics in 2006 by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Although he contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2009, he faced defeat against the Indian National Congress candidate Vijay Bahuguna. This led to his departure from the BJP in 2012, when he switched allegiances to the Indian National Congress in Uttarakhand. However, his journey in the shooting world continued as he faced challenges in his coaching career. In 2019, controversy erupted when the Delhi State Rifle Association filed a case against the government for omitting Rana’s name from the list of Dronacharya Awardees. The subsequent recognition came in 2020 when he was finally honored with the Dronacharya Award, a moment he shared with pride, stressing that the honor belonged to his entire team and his students.
While Jaspal’s career in both sports and politics has been marked by ups and downs, he remains a pivotal figure in Indian shooting. His daughter, Devanshi Rana, has followed in her father’s footsteps, making her mark as part of the Indian National Shooting Team and achieving success in international competitions. Despite facing criticism during his coaching tenure, particularly concerning his relationship with prominent shooters like Manu Bhaker, Jaspal has maintained that his decisions were always in the best interest of the athletes he trains. Today, he dedicates his efforts to nurturing the next generation of shooters through the Jaspal Rana Institute of Education and Technology in Dehradun, fostering talent that continues to elevate Indian shooting on the world stage.
