INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Chirag Shetty is a prominent Indian professional badminton player, specializing in both mixed team and men’s doubles events. His journey into the world of badminton began at the age of 16, shortly after completing his 10th standard. Despite his academic inclination and a keen interest in science, Chirag made a significant decision to shift his focus to commerce. This choice was motivated by the time commitment required for pursuing science, which would clash with his aspirations to train as a professional badminton player. His determination and commitment to the sport marked the beginning of a path that would lead him to numerous accolades and milestones.
During his school years, Chirag actively participated in various club and state-level badminton competitions, laying the groundwork for his future career. Recognizing the need for specialized training, he moved to Hyderabad to join the prestigious Pullela Gopichand Academy, where he trained under the guidance of India’s Chief National Coach, Pullela Gopichand himself. This pivotal move opened doors for Chirag to compete in national and international tournaments, culminating in a remarkable performance at the School Nationals, where he secured the team championship and an individual bronze medal. Although his father, Chandrashekhar Shetty, initially harbored reservations about his son’s involvement in team sports due to concerns about the politics involved, he ultimately supported Chirag’s passion for badminton, championing the idea that his children should pursue sports in any form they desired.
Chirag made his professional debut in 2013 at the Sushant Chipalkatti Memorial India Junior International Badminton Championship, where, despite not reaching the finals, he gained invaluable experience. The following year proved to be a turning point for him as he qualified for the Tata Open India International Challenge in the mixed doubles category, partnering with Kuhoo. Though they fell short in the quarter-finals, their determination shone through. Chirag’s hard work paid off in 2014 when he clinched his first international gold medal with M.R. Arjun at the Swiss Junior Open in men’s doubles, followed by another gold at the Yonex Belgian Junior, establishing his presence on the international stage.
As Chirag’s career progressed, he formed a partnership with fellow badminton player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. Initially, their off-court dynamics were challenging due to their different backgrounds and personalities. However, with encouragement from their coach to spend more time together, the duo cultivated a strong friendship that translated into remarkable on-court success. They first garnered attention by winning the Tata Open India International Challenge in 2016, and their partnership flourished as they went on to secure multiple titles, including the prestigious gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Their synergy continued to break records, culminating in a historic win at the French Open in 2019, making them the first Indian doubles pair to triumph at a BWF Tour 500 event.
Chirag Shetty’s accolades continued to grow, including the esteemed Arjuna Award, which he received in a virtual ceremony during the pandemic in 2020. His achievements were recognized by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray, who felicitated him for his contribution to Indian sports. In 2021, Chirag and Satwiksairaj represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, where they gave their all but narrowly missed advancing to the knockout stage. Despite the disappointment, Chirag maintained a positive outlook, reflecting the complexities of competitive sports. As of March 10, 2024, the duo celebrated another significant victory, winning gold for the second time in men’s doubles at the French Open in Paris. Equipped with his trusty Voltric 80 E-tune badminton racket, Chirag Shetty continues to inspire aspiring athletes and contribute to the legacy of Indian badminton on the global stage.
