INTERESTING BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Anirban Bhattacharya, a prominent figure in the Tollywood industry, is an Indian actor, theatre artist, singer, and director celebrated for his remarkable portrayal of the titular character in the popular hoichoi web series “Byomkesh.” Born into a Bengali-Brahmin family in Midnapore, West Bengal, Anirban’s journey into the world of performing arts began early in life. He recalls his school days with fondness, admitting that while academics were not his strong suit, he excelled in subjects like Bengali and History. The vast open spaces of his hometown provided a backdrop for a carefree childhood filled with play, and despite his lack of enthusiasm for studies, Anirban never failed a class.
After completing high school in 2004, Anirban relocated to Kolkata to chase his passion for theatre. Living in the bustling city, he shared a room with Ashok Dinda, a promising Indian cricketer, during those formative years. At just nineteen, he joined Uhinee Kolkata to receive formal training in theatre, where he honed his skills under the guidance of Adrija Dasgupta, an accomplished theatre professional and alumnus of the National School of Drama. Between 2005 and 2010, Anirban participated in various theatrical productions directed by Adrija, establishing a solid foundation for his burgeoning career. His academic pursuits continued alongside his artistic endeavors, as he pursued a Master of Arts in Drama and Theatre, further enriching his understanding of the craft.
In 2010, Anirban took his passion for performance to the next level by training in Chhau, a traditional folk dance of West Bengal, and soon after was selected to act professionally at Minerva, one of Kolkata’s oldest theatres. Over the next few years, he appeared in several theatrical productions, showcasing his range as a performer. His involvement in Bengali-language theatre productions, such as “Iccher Oli Goli,” “Awdyo Shesh Rajani,” and “Ghore Baire,” solidified his reputation as a talented actor. Anirban also ventured into directing, making his debut with the production “Amader Dana Nei” in 2008 and later directing notable plays like “Guru” and “Chowmatha.”
Anirban made his mark in the film industry in 2013 with his debut in Tollywood through the movie “Kolkatar King,” where he played Judhajit Sarkar. His filmography expanded rapidly; by 2015, he had acted in multiple Bengali films and made his television debut with the Zee Bangla series “Kader Kul-er Bou.” He gained further recognition for his role in the acclaimed web series “Byomkesh,” appearing across four seasons. This success was complemented by his foray into playback singing, where he lent his voice to various Bengali songs, starting with “Kichchu Chaini Ami.” Anirban’s artistic versatility has also seen him venture into Bollywood, with a notable role in “Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway” alongside Rani Mukerji.
Apart from his impressive career, Anirban’s personal life has been a subject of interest. He married his longtime friend, Madhurima Goswami, a fellow theatre artist, in November 2020. Despite facing online trolls and body-shaming comments following their wedding, Anirban has remained focused on his career, emphasizing that he prioritizes his work over social media opinions. A fitness enthusiast, he maintains a simple diet consisting mainly of handmade rotis and chicken stew, reflecting his practical approach to health and nutrition. As Anirban continues to evolve in his career, his commitment to his craft and personal growth remains unwavering, marking him as a noteworthy talent in contemporary Indian cinema and theatre.
